Overview of Pencil Hardness Tester:
Use this simple tool to determine the hardness and scratch resistance of a coating. A pencil of known hardness is held at a 45° angle and moved across a coated surface at 1mm/s while applying a known pressure (7.5N /1.68lbf / 750g). The resistance of a coating (also known as its pencil hardness) is indicated by the grade of the hardest pencil that does not permanently mark the coating. See the table below for a list of ranking of pencils by hardness.
