Wood Moisture Meters:     

- Two types of wood moisture meters exist on the market:

- with pins & without pins

With PINS: used to measure moisture at specific locations and specific depths. Also used to penetrate cavities, like through drywall to measure wood within wall. Also excellent when determining a problem with the underlayment or substrate in hardwood installations where wood is buckling due to excessive moisture. Has available options for hand probe or a hammer probe to penetrate through hardwood to the underlayment. All pin meters includes a chart to correct the reading for species and temperature. The standard is based on Douglas Fir at 68F.

 

Without PINS: These meters scan across a flat surface quickly and easily and give you super fast results across large areas. Excellent to measure hardwood or flat boards to check moisture levels in new wood prior to installation. New wood with higher levels of moisture by as little as 4% more than required will quite often shrink and cause gaps between boards. Also excellent to check a the substrate prior to installing a new floor of hardwood, carpet or linoleum type products. A wet area is sure to cause problems at a later stage.  All pinless meters include a chart for wood species with a specific gravity. Enter this number into the unit to measure accurately, no corrections required.

Concrete Moisture:         

 

Higher than normal concrete moisture causes distress or complete failure in floor coverings.

 

Good Rule: 1 month of drying time per 1” of depth at 70°F with blowing wind at 30% relative humidity.

 

                        Concrete Moisture can be measured by several methods. ASTM, the governing body of Standards in America has standards for each method.

 

In the past (since 1950), moisture in concrete has been measured by primarily one method called Calcium Chloride. This older method uses a weigh scale accurate to 0.1 grams and the necessary equipment. It is quickly loosing to moisture meters as discussed further below. For those still using the Calcium Chloride test, please read further below.

 

Concrete Moisture Meters

These include the measurement by meters to have more representative and accurate results They help reduce lawsuits caused by contractors and installers having no data to prove their case. In any case, diligent data recording of both ambient and concrete is highly recommended. Hardwood manufacturer’s are also providing acceptable moisture levels for their woods that must be adhered to for warranties. If not, call the manufacturer. To accomplish this you need concrete moisture meters.

We provide three different accurate methods. The newer ASTM regulations require that the area to be measured be acclimated as when tenants would have. It also requires that three tests be done for the first 1000 ft2 and thereafter one test per 1000 ft2. of concrete surface.

Methods.

 

1.      In-Situ” - Drilling a 5/8” hole to 40% of the slab depth and placing a capped sleeve into the hole and waiting 72 hours. Insert the RH probe moisture meter into the hole to measure the “RH”, relative humidity. This is called “in-situ” method. ASTM F2170-02

2.      Insulated Hood” - Placing a hood and taping-sealing it down to the slab and placing an RH probe into the built-in sleeve on the hood after 72 hours. This is called the “Insulated Hood” method. ASTM F2420-05

3.      Instantaneous Concrete Moisture by placing a meter over a slab. This method should be done to assure yourself that no wet spots exist in the slab or if you have any concerns. It does not replace the in-situ but helps in assuring yourself of an acceptable surface without waiting 72 hours. Choose the CME4.

Cons for Calcium Chloride Tests:

 

These tests show the moisture in the top portion of the slab, perhaps ½” into the concrete only. Thus does not accurately demonstrate the moisture deep in the slab and once covered by a non breathable covering the moisture will rise and cause damage to the covering and adhesive, etc. Calcium Chloride tests are becoming home made and do not meet ASTM requirements bringing the results into question. Many products on the market retard moisture emissions within the concrete or just have paint, adhesive, or an invisible seal and cure products that give false readings on Calcium Chloride.

 

 

Inexperienced people tested the floor with a calcium chloride test kit, found the results met the criteria required by the selected floor covering manufacturer and recommended that installation of materials proceed. Soon after installation, the flooring or its adhesive system failed and new tests were ordered. The new tests reveal moisture vapor emission levels far higher than the original test results and the inevitable finger pointing ensued. Typically, the concrete surface in the open warehouse had in fact dried sufficiently to reveal moisture vapor emission levels low enough to pass the requirements of a floor covering manufacturer. However, once covered, moisture content in the concrete begins to rise and can cause a failure of the floor covering system. We often see this same issue in residential projects when carpet and pad are replaced with sheet vinyl or wood flooring products. Although we have not yet seen this difficulty when testing with in-situ relative humidity probes, there should always be concern when covering or coating concrete that is not protected by an effective sub-slab vapor retarding membrane.
